Since 1967 every issue of SHOPaktuell has presented a skilful mix of shopfitting, architecture, events and design. Within the framework of the new corporate design of UMDASCH Shopfitting the customer magazine has also undergone a major relaunch. SHOPaktuell is now called “shops, the shopfitting magazine”. In addition to the changes to the content and appearance, there have been changes within the editorial team as well. Twice a year, under the direction ofPetraBöttinger-Barth this exclusive publication will be presenting trend-setting content relating to the retail sector, shopfitting, shop design and presentation.
The first issue of the new magazine focuses entirely on presentation at outstanding locations around the world. The core element of the magazine is the gallery. This successor to the popular Shop Panorama feature has been given a facelift. It is a “Hall of Fame” from the UMDASCH Shopfitting point of view – the latest and best projects from all sectors and specialist areas, compiled with strong pictures and wide perspectives. What is new here is that in each issue, “shops” will also be looking around for promising concepts and innovations beyond the retail scene, even if they were not the work of UMDASCH Shopfitting.
Rome–London–Dubai-Sydney
Each issue of the new magazine will be dedicated to a particular special topic. In this way, “shops” will show shopfitting and shopfitting marketing from a variety of different angles. That is why, in the first issue, you will find an interview with the art manager Max Hollein, whose unusual insights into the business keep the world in suspense. As if that were not enough, “shops” also presents the most exciting shopping experience worlds on earth, during which it transpires thatLos Angelesis the new shopping mecca. Explanations are provided as to why the pleasures of shopping are booming on the high seas, and whyHong Kongoccupies top place among the shopping metropolises. The specialist area “Food & Care”, which has become firmly established at UMDASCH Shopfitting in particular since the company merged with Assmann Ladenbau, is presented through star chef Tim Raue. In his two-star restaurant inBerlinhe demonstrates the interaction between atmosphere and aromas. In search of new profiles
Innovative shop concepts in shoe retailing form a main focus in this issue. Faced with verticalisation, digitalisation and an increasing interest in the complete outfit, the shoe retail sector is currently searching for new formats and profiles. Some suppliers have already found them.
Shoe experts like Mag. Peter Horvath (Leder & Schuh, Graz), Kerstin Slawatycki (HR Group, Osnabrück), Peter-Philip Kienast (Wedemark), Wilfried Harml (Ringschuh, Graz), Christoph Guionneau (recently at Görtz) as well as successful niche players like Andrea and Franz Wunderl will all be commenting on developments in SHOP aktuell. The statements of these professionals will be appropriately illustrated with interesting examples.
Another exciting essay entitled “Just Browsing” will discuss the phenomenon of “showrooming”. Gemma Ball from the famousLondonbranding agency Portland Design describes the far-reaching effects of the smartphone on shopping behaviour. Her summary of the situation: “The fusion of shopping and innovative technology leads to a real increase in value.”
International shop design trends are by no means neglected in SHOP aktuell 112. The magazine spotlights the current highlights of theNew Yorkshopping scene, from Apple and Armani to Uniqlo and Zara. It also takes a look at the hot spots of the Argentinian capitalBuenos Aires. More international flair will also be found in Shop Panorama, which introduces projects like Arnotts (Dublin), Mexx (Amsterdam), A 1 (Salzburg), Yves Saint Laurent (London), Thun (La Spezia), Suite 341 (Paris), Oryx Galleria (Doha), Spar Gourmet (Vienna) and Molton Brown (London). The Midfield is Alive and Kicking
The recently published issue no. 111 of the international specialist magazine SHOP aktuell has chosen the “new midfield” in the retail sector as its main focus. The statements by experts and impressive examples demonstrate that medium-sized companies, which are frequently also positioned in the middle as regards pricing, are in the ascendant. They have emancipated themselves in their sales-area partnerships, come to terms with (inner-city) shopping centres and increasingly play along on the multi-channel scene.
Among those stating their opinions in the magazine published by Umdasch are Christoph Huber (Garhammer, Waldkirchen), Sebo Kramer (Leffers, Oldenburg), Jutta Pemsel (Kaufstraße, Mistelbach) as well as Richard Engelhorn in the in-depth Shop Talk. A further contribution in SHOP aktuell – from the pen of Dr. David Bosshart – discusses the digitalisation of the consumer world under the heading “The Story of Unstoring”. The colours expert Prof. Axel Venn explains in an interesting essay “How Colours Really Work.”
In Shop Panorama noteworthy shops in various countries are presented, including Sportalm in Mayrhofen, Mulberry in New York, Arabesq in Dubai, Reno in Szeged, Salewa in Bolzano, Bayard in Zermatt, DSTEP in Neu-Isenburg and Hamashbir in Israel. There is also an extensive reportage on the Eybl World Store in Vösendorf near Vienna. A preview of the shop expedition “In 18 Tagen um die Welt” (Around the World in 18 Days) rounds out the range of subjects covered in SHOP aktuell 111.

Shops & Shopping in Shanghai
In this age of total sensory overload, it is no longer the competition between products which counts in the retail sphere, but the competition for attention. Classic forms of advertising such as advertisements, brochures and television spots are falling behind. Instead, it is the POS itself which has moved into the limelight as the most important advertising medium. Shops which have been charged with emotion and a sensuous presentation are expected to attract visitors, to encourage and entertain them and thus to arouse their enthusiasm and therefore ultimately seduce them. SHOP aktuell 110 shows numerous examples and lists the most important rules, tips and tricks for successful visual merchandising concepts.
The shops and shopping scene in the Chinese business metropolis Shanghai; the increasing fusion of online and offline concepts; the new Globetrotter store in Munich; and the trends at the EuroShop are further topics in the latest publication by Umdasch Shop-Concept. In Shop Talk Martin Wäg, executive board member of Kastner & Öhler, speaks of bidding “farewell to the department store”.

Shopping Centres: The Next Generation
The next generation of shopping centres will be somewhat smaller, but will radiate a mood of urban exclusivity. That is the conclusion, at least, of a trend reportage in the international magazine SHOP aktuell 109. Experts like Mag. Marcus Wild, CEO of SES, and Klaus Striebich, Managing Director of ECE express their opinions in the article. In a phase of revitalisation and modernisation the importance of anchor tenants is also changing. Here the rule is now “big name before large area”.
The second main topic in SHOP aktuell 109 is store branding. The Mexx relaunch is taken as an example to show the typical ideal sequence of the branding process. This is also discussed by Mexx CEO Thomas Grote in Shop Talk. The list of recently completed shop projects reported in this issue, which will be published shortly before the EuroShop, includes Intersport Eybl, Kastner & Öhler, Elektro Haas, Niketown London, Stockmann, Swisscom, Billa Corso, Thalia Dorsten, Hannspree, Blue Tomato, Esprit, Coop City, Dublin Airport Terminal 2.

Sports Retailing in Top Form
SHOP aktuell 108 provides a platform for a number of insiders in the sector to present their points of view. There are interesting comments, for example, like those of Dr. Peter Wahle (Sport Eybl & Sports Experts), who records current developments in sports retailing: “Today, multi-channel marketing is simply an essential aspect of bricks-and mortar retailing. It’s unstoppable. It is as if we were trying to hold back the sea.” The sports focus in the new issue is continued in Shop Report: With its “House of Football” in Soweto/South Africa, Nike attracted world attention in time for the opening of the Football World Championships.
In the execution of large-scale and rollout projects in particular, professional project management has long been the international norm. An additional focus in the new edition of the magazine therefore examines the requirements made of this discipline in shopfitting. In issue no. 108 SHOP aktuell also took a look at the elegant West End of London as well as visiting what is currently one of the world’s most spectacular shopping centres – Westfield London. A number of famous destinations are also represented in “Table Talk”. A number of international projects demonstrate the important role of tables in modern visual merchandising. “Around the World” is also the motto of Shop Panorama. From Esprit in New York to the new Duty Free shop in Auckland – readers will find a round-the-world tour of the world of shopping.

Health & beauty stores head for success
Against a background of the first generation to grow up entirely in the internet age, retailers can look forward to exciting times. In future the (retail) companies and concepts which will be successful will be primarily those which manage to synchronise the digital and the physical world. It will be necessary to encourage consumers to enter into a permanent dialogue and interaction on all channels. In SHOP aktuell 107 this forward-looking subject is examined by famous international experts from a variety of disciplines.
Another leading article in this issue analyses the successful developments of the health and beauty and cosmetics sectors. The guest in Shop Talk this time is the American star architect Ron Pompei; his C3 philosophy (Commerce, Culture, Community) is currently causing a furore. A look at Dubai shows that the emirate on the Persian Gulf may not have been bypassed by the economic turbulence, but it still remains a country of superlatives. The opening of the Burj Dubai and the 350,000 m² Dubai Mall show this clearly. Further reportages are devoted to Dielmann, the Darmstadt-based shoe and sports concern, and to trends in visual marketing.

Alpbach Retail Forum 15.-17.10.09
Quite a number of experts are convinced that as a result of the economic crisis and the “Green Trends”, a topic which has long since become socially acceptable, we can expect a paradigm shift in consumer habits. New retail formats will be established; local markets will experience a renaissance.
One small puzzle piece in this exciting development is the fact that the successful model of large size partnerships is increasingly being called into question. SHOP aktuell 106 reports on this subject – and many others. The future of retailing is also the focal point of the Alpbach International Retail Forum DIE KUNST DER INSZENIERUNG II (STAGECRAFT IN RETAILING II) from 15 − 17 October 2009. During this unique event illustrious experts from a variety of disciplines will be giving lectures.

Retail and shopfitting trends
Market saturation in Western-oriented countries; ecological trends and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility); the power of the Best Agers; the vertical revolution; multi-channel strategies; and the new focus of shopping centres not only pose interesting challenges for the retail sector itself; as a result, they also affect the shopfitting sector. SHOP aktuell 105 analyses the different trends and describes practical examples.
“Glass in Shopfitting” is another article in this issue which introduces an interesting trend. Dr. Christian Mikunda’s story “Of Flagship Stores and Maid Cafés” provides a foretaste of the “Laden-Dramatugie LIVE!” (Shop Dramaturgy LIVE!) expeditions to be held in Tokyo in May. And there is also the first advance report about the Alpbach International Retail Forum “Stagecraft in Retailing II”, which the Umdasch Shop Academy will be presenting in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps from 15 – 17 October 2009.

What they all have in common is that Umdasch Shop-Concept was involved in the design or realisation. These examples show the extent to which Umdasch has established a reputation in recent years as a global brand-shop factory.
Additional subjects in SHOP aktuell 103 include the exciting developments in travel and airport retailing and the as-yet unexploited opportunities provided by the 60-plus market. Shopping Centres in the Fast Lane
This issue of SHOP aktuell offers once more a wealth of first-hand information on the subjects of store branding and shopfitting. Brand new, too, is the Umdasch ShopShow, Europe’s permanently up-to-date shopfitting fair, located at the Umdasch Concern headquarters in Amstetten/ Lower Austria.
“Shopping Centres will remain in the Fast Lane” – that is the message behind the title story in SHOP aktuell 102. The good performance of the shopping temples is partly explained by the high-quality location as such, but it is also a result of the more professional framework such centres offer compared with shopping streets.

Neuro-marketing in the retail trade
In recent years, the retail scene in Central Europe has observed with a certain degree of envy, the positive development in other countries - for example, in the United Kingdom and Ireland or in the flourishing markets of Eastern Europe. Now an upswing is finally noticeable here as well. Many retail concerns have adapted and taken into account the new rules of consumerism and the increased competition.
They have developed a clearly defined individual profile and act with strategies which differentiate between the various target groups and styles. They also place greater emphasis on the export of their concepts to other countries. This Centenary edition of SHOP aktuell aims to demonstrate by means of innovative ideas and outstanding examples how the current upswing can be used to best advantage.

Opportunities and Limitations in POS Marketing
Professional POS marketing guarantees the product a prominent position on the retailer's shelves. This marketing discipline, which is often sadly neglected, but which spans the gap between industry and trade, provides the opening headline for this edition of SHOP aktuell.
